Small RPGs are quietly thriving on phones
There's a wave of small, ambitious RPGs on mobile that don't get nearly enough attention. They can't compete on scale, so instead they compete on personality, and that turns out to be a great trade.
Emberfall Saga is a perfect example. It's tiny compared to a console RPG, but its writing and tight combat make it feel bigger than it is. A small team that knows exactly what it's making beats a bloated one every time.
What I love is how these games fit into real life. Turn-based combat means you can play a fight during a coffee break and lose nothing by stepping away. That's a genuine advantage over the always-on epics.
If you're new to the genre on mobile, start with something turn-based and story-driven. Save the sprawling systems for later; the joy is in the characters first.
Give the slow openings a little patience. These games almost always bloom once your party and options open up.
